Asphalt fire at refinery following an explosion
A large explosion occurred at the refinery’s fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and gas concentrated unit. Debris from the explosion was flown in all directions. One debris piece hit an asphalt tank and released hot asphalt. Initial fires were extinguished quickly. There was then a secondary asphalt fire which ignited near the storage tanks and spread. Fire crews sprayed foam and were able to extinguish the asphalt fire much more quickly than expected (hours as opposed to days). A partnership between the refinery response team and the municipal firefighting department was suggested as the main reason that this fire was controlled so quickly.
