Ammonia release at refrigeration site after pipe rupture
A release of ammonia occurred at a refrigerated unit after a pipe ruptured due to hydraulic shock. After a re-start at the refrigeration unit, high pressure ammonia gas rapidly condensed into a liquid in the pipe and the pipe ruptured due to hydraulic shock. A cloud of ammonia was released and travelled 400 metres (¼ a mile) away from the facility, with 153 people exposed to toxic anhydrous ammonia, 32 offsite workers required hospitalisation and 4 of them were admitted to an intensive care unit.
