Fatal Argon asphyxiation in confined space welding

Published on 17/10/23 848 Views

During construction activities at an LNG plant, Argon was used in corrosion resistant alloy (CRA) welding to eliminate oxygen from the molten weld. This resulted in an accumulation of Argon within the piping system. When the welder inspected the weld from inside the confined space, he fainted and ultimately lost his life.

Ask yourself and your crew:

  • How can something like this happen here (e.g. on our site)?
  • What safety measures (i.e. procedures, controls/barriers) do we have in place to mitigate the risk?
  • How do we know the risk controls/barriers are working?
  • What improvements or changes should we make to the procedures, controls/barriers or the way we work?
