Bitterfeld explosion: Consequences of safety oversights

Published on 13/12/24 259 Views

A leak at the Bitterfeld polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plant caused an explosion, killing 42 and injuring hundreds, due to the release of toxic vinyl-chloride gas. The incident exposed severe safety negligence and cost the state over a billion East German Marks.

Ask yourself and your crew:

  • How can something like this happen here (e.g. on our site)?
  • What safety measures (i.e. procedures, controls/barriers) do we have in place to mitigate the risk?
  • How do we know the risk controls/barriers we have in place are working?
  • What improvements or changes should we make to the procedures, controls/barriers, or the way we work?
